One weekday evening, after finishing up some errands and heading home, we didn’t have time to make dinner, so we decided to get takeout from Hidakaya.
What Is Hidakaya?
Hidakaya is a famous casual Chinese restaurant chain in Japan. They’re usually located near train stations, where office workers eat lunch or dinner, and many families also frequent them.
What We Ordered

The most popular fried rice is right at the front. We ordered a large portion to share with the family.
Behind that, there’s also delicious stir-fried vegetables.

This is “Dragon Chicken.” It’s karaage topped with chili peppers, and it had a spicy flavor that seemed perfect with alcohol.

These are all the dishes we ordered. Does it look like a small amount? When we actually ate it, the portion was enough to fill all three of us—me, my husband, and our child—to the brim. We’re definitely not light eaters.
Of course, the flavor was simple and delicious, and it was the kind of taste that made me want to eat it again.
The Receipt Breakdown

The total amount we paid for our takeout dinner was 3,090 yen. This includes an 8% consumption tax on the food items. Since tipping is not expected in Japan, this cost does not include a tip.
3,090 yen is on the cheaper side for a family of three eating out, but cooking at home is still cheaper.
On days like this, when we don’t have time to make dinner at home, we casually eat out.
